The song's original title was "I Never Asked for Your Last Name." It is a true story.
When Red was young he did not think about the future. He could not even imagine what it would be like to look back later in life at a trail of relationships, some of which would be later recalled either as a high point in his life or as a great "learning experience", or both. In Red's case, those few weeks with his heart set on Suzie count as both, in a manner of speaking.
Red drove 22 hours straight from California to Colorado to visit Suzie, before he got run out of Boulder by the law. Suzie was sad to see Red go. The last time she and he spoke was on the phone a year after that, when she called, wanting to connect as she was passing through town. Red was busy having dinner with a nearly-deceased grandfather, who was telling stories of his youth. Suzie never called again, and Red never saw Suzie again. And, no, he never asked for her last name. If Grandpa had told all the stories he had to tell, there would certainly be one about his own version of Lonesome Suzie.
